Welcome To The Happy None!
This title is a nod to Stendhal dedicating his work “to the Happy Few,” and while there are a number of interpretations for what his dedication could be referencing (“the thousand happy few” from Lord Byron’s Don Juan; or “we few, we happy few, we band of brothers” from Shakespeare’s Henry V), the most common interpretation is that it is from Oliver Goldsmith’s The Vicar of Wakefield where “the happy few” refers to the small number of people who read the titular Vicar’s treatise on monogamy. And this is the interpretation I subscribe to because it amuses me the most.
It also serves the purpose of my newsletter the best. As you can already tell from this rambling intro, there will be few happy readers of my sanctimonious literary ramblings, and because I’m a modest type I don’t even assume there will be a few.
With all that out of the way, I guess I should discuss my intentions for this newsletter a bit. Simply put, I read a lot and have a lot of thoughts on what I read. Not original thoughts, and at best inconsistently interesting, but we all need our outlet and this is going to be mine. If you like classics, weird fiction and translated literature then this newsletter may be interesting to you. Won’t guarantee it’ll make you Happy, but I have a feeling it will at least Moderately Intrigue you.
